Polymarket US launches 5-minute crypto up/down markets on US app
Polymarket US introduced 5-minute binary contracts on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP to its US app on October 27. The up/down markets use time-weighted average price settlement via CF Benchmarks. Users now have up to 288 trading windows per asset daily. The contracts operate under CFTC-designated contract market rules through QCX LLC. The product marks Polymarket's entry into ultra-short-duration crypto prediction markets alongside its political and sports event contracts.
Polymarket US now competes directly with Robinhood's same-day and sub-hourly crypto contracts for high-frequency retail traders. The 5-minute format trains users to cycle continuously between settlement windows, maximizing fee capture per session. That density raises the stakes for clearing reliability: any interruption during active windows would scatter traders within hours, as Robinhood's August volume dip already demonstrated.
Robinhood relies on partner exchanges including Kalshi and its Rothera JV for settlement; Polymarket clears through its own CFTC-regulated QCX infrastructure. In a market where retail traders increasingly compare venues on stability during peak hours, owning the full stack is a pitch Robinhood cannot make. The product also widens Polymarket's revenue base beyond political contracts ahead of midterm season.
Polymarket joins Robinhood's short-term Ethereum prediction markets and Gate's index-priced Bitcoin and Ether contracts in moving prediction-market formats toward sub-hourly crypto settlement windows.
