NFL Week 1 drives $3.12B in prediction market volume
NFL Week 1 generated $3.12 billion in prediction market volume across the sector, according to National Football Post. Polymarket alone recorded $404 million in volume on Sunday, down from its average daily volume of $532 million. The Sunday figure was below an average day's pace for the CFTC-registered exchange. The figures emerge as multiple platforms compete for football-season flow. Kalshi posted a record $4.9 billion across the same weekend. Novig debuted with $125 million in its first sports week earlier this month.
Polymarket's Sunday volume dropped below its own daily average during the NFL's highest-volume week, a signal that sports bettors are not yet migrating to the exchange's political-heavy platform in force. Kalshi captured the bulk of football flow, aided by FanDuel's market-making. Novig's $125 million debut adds a third regulated venue chasing the same sports bettor pool.
The split matters: platforms that prove they can sustain order-book quality through the NFL season will enter the midterm cycle with the liquidity and brand recognition to dominate. Polymarket must now decide whether to match Kalshi's sports-specific depth or cede that quarter to its rival and focus on political contracts. Either choice has volume consequences that will harden before January.
