Polymarket's dominance on Polygon set to end with own-chain migration
Polymarket has become the dominant source of activity on the Polygon blockchain. The crypto-native prediction market platform is planning to migrate to its own blockchain, a move that would significantly reduce Polygon's transaction volume. Other remaining activity on Polygon includes stablecoins and staking. The platform's eventual departure raises questions about Polygon's revenue sustainability and its ability to retain other DeFi users.
Polygon faces a revenue cliff when Polymarket completes its migration to a proprietary blockchain. The prediction market's fees have powered the lion's share of Polygon's protocol activity, so its exit would leave stablecoins and staking as the remaining attractions. That concentration risk is now visible to every blockchain competing for prediction-market volume.
For Polymarket, running its own chain removes rent paid to a third-party Layer 1 and may allow tighter control over latency and user costs. The timeline matters: the longer the migration takes, the more Polygon can court replacement DeFi projects. But no replacement of comparable scale is currently evident, and a sudden volume drop could trigger a validator-exit spiral that hurts both chains before the separation completes.
Robinhood's $156 million Q2 prediction-market revenue already tops its legacy businesses, joining Polymarket's dominance on Polygon as evidence that single-vertical concentration now defines operator valuations across the sector.
