Irish regulator threatens Polymarket with High Court action, prompting geoblock
The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland threatened a prediction market operator with High Court action, citing grave concerns about unregulated betting. Polymarket geoblocked Irish users shortly after. The GRAI CEO confirmed proceedings against an unnamed operator could follow. Polymarket has faced restrictions in more than 30 countries including Belgium, Germany, Italy, and France.
Why this matters?
Polymarket must now fight product classification on a European front, as national gambling law overrides CFTC status. Each new jurisdiction shrinks the addressable market where it can serve retail users without local licensing or litigation. Rival platforms face identical risk.
