Polymarket investigated dozens of election-related cases, former FBI official says

Polymarket has investigated dozens of election-related cases involving suspected insider trading and manipulation, the platform's head of global operations Bautista told NPR on October 27, 2026. Bautista, a former FBI official and cryptocurrency analyst, said her 16-person team is using a new election surveillance system to probe the cases. At least two investigations have been referred to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Economics professor Rajiv Sethi said election prediction markets are uniquely vulnerable to manipulation. The disclosure comes as Polymarket and chief competitor Kalshi grow their election-focused markets.

Why this matters?

Every insider-trading lapse on a CFTC-registered platform erodes the argument that federal oversight is sufficient to keep markets clean. Polymarket's own head of operations confirmed dozens of active investigations, with at least two referred to the CFTC. That self-reported volume undercuts the platform's public trust posture just as House Oversight has expanded its insider-trading probe across five platforms and the Pentagon has banned troops from feeding nonpublic military information to prediction markets.

The first CFTC-registered exchange to fail this credibility test will set the compliance template the rest of the industry must meet. Kalshi already faces its own insider-trading probe into pardon-related trades. A second high-profile lapse would strengthen calls for mandatory surveillance legislation that every competitor would need to fund.

The bigger picture

The disclosure adds Polymarket's self-reported election probes to a running federal crackdown that already includes the Pentagon's ban on troops using nonpublic military information on prediction markets and the CFTC's parallel swaps rulemaking, with at least two cases referred to the CFTC as regulators close in on both sides of the insider-trading threat.
