Polymarket draws 60% of users with no prior onchain trading experience, study finds

Published Jun 26, 2026 Updated 3h ago

A Bitget Wallet study of 857,377 active Polymarket users over 90 days found that nearly 60% had never traded on a decentralized exchange or onchain before. The report, published Friday, suggests prediction markets are serving as a primary onboarding channel for mainstream users entering crypto rather than catering only to an existing DeFi-native audience. The finding comes as Polymarket handles record volume tied to the World Cup. Bitcoin and MicroStrategy shares have been declining during the same period. Bitget Wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet provider. The study did not break down which specific markets — political, sports, or other events — attracted the first-time users.

Why this matters?

Polymarket's newcomer-heavy user base forces Kalshi and Robinhood's Rothera to compete on simple fiat onboarding, not crypto-native features. If sports and political bettors keep arriving without DeFi experience, the venue that hides blockchain complexity wins the retail race.
