CFTC proposes ban on prediction market wagers on ouster of U.S. enemies
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission unveiled proposed rules Wednesday that would ban prediction market wagers on the ouster of U.S. adversaries. The restrictions would prohibit event contracts where outcomes could be influenced by war, assassination, or targeted military action, even when conflict is not explicitly mentioned in the contract terms. The proposal targets politically sensitive markets on regulated platforms and narrows the scope of permissible trading. The agency indicated that individuals with relevant expertise should alert authorities rather than trade on such events. The move comes as the CFTC has stepped up its oversight of the prediction market sector broadly.
Kalshi and other CFTC-registered platforms must now screen existing and proposed markets for latent war or assassination exposure. Any contract that crosses the proposed line risks enforcement action once the rule is finalized.
The CFTC's Wednesday proposal adds war and assassination screening to a broader rulemaking already covering Kalshi and other platforms' sports event contracts, with final rules expected after comment.
