Kalshi clearinghouse seeks CFTC nod for bitcoin-backed leveraged futures
Kalshi Klear, the platform's clearinghouse, applied to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to offer margin on select event contracts. The filing would allow leveraged perpetual-futures bets collateralized by bitcoin-backed loans. The move expands Kalshi's product suite beyond binary event contracts into leveraged derivatives. Details on leverage limits, eligible client tiers, and launch timing were not disclosed.
This filing tests whether the CFTC will let a regulated prediction market exchange carry crypto-collateralized leverage under its federal umbrella. If approved, Kalshi would offer US retail traders leveraged crypto exposure without the offshore perpetual-futures venues that block American users. The structure mirrors its Webull and Robinhood distribution partnerships, where partners supply users and Kalshi supplies the regulated rails.
But the CFTC's pending swap-rule proposal could reclassify event contracts and force product redesign before launch. Approval also sharpens the state-federal conflict: Ohio and Tennessee have already stripped Kalshi's preemption shield, and each state victory becomes template law the next attorney general copies. Kalshi must now clear three hurdles — federal license, federal rule survival, and state court defense — to make this product stick.
Joins Webull as the second major partner-dependent distribution deal Kalshi has assembled in recent coverage, after earlier partnerships with Robinhood, Rothera, Crypto.com, and OG.com layered retail users onto its CFTC-registered stack.
