Kalshi signs Ronald Acuña Jr. as first MLB player partner for prediction markets
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. has partnered with Kalshi, becoming the first Major League Baseball player to align with a regulated prediction market. The deal was announced as Georgia lawmakers consider sports betting legalization. Kalshi is a Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated exchange offering event contracts on sports, politics, and other outcomes. Baseball's existing gambling rules create uncertainty around how player partnerships with event-contract platforms will be treated.
Athlete endorsements have become the primary customer acquisition channel as prediction markets race for retail share. Kalshi's Acuña deal follows Novig's equity-for-endorsement structure with Sydney Sweeney and Polymarket's reported $15 million annual cash arrangement with LeBron James. Each model now faces live testing: Novig must prove Sweeney's equity converts funded accounts more cheaply than cash payouts; Kalshi must show Acuña draws baseball fans without triggering MLB discipline or league opposition.
The leagues remain hostile, with the NFL, NBA, and MLB already opposing CFTC preemption in court. A visible abuse incident or player gambling scandal would arm league lobbyists with concrete evidence that prediction markets harm athletes. Kalshi gains Georgia exposure as that state debates sports betting expansion, but the partnership also invites scrutiny of whether active players trading on their own markets creates conflicts baseball's rulebook never contemplated.
