Kalshi investor Alex Kurland joins Menlo Ventures as partner

Published Sep 8, 2026Updated 2h ago

Alex Kurland has joined Menlo Ventures as partner, the firm announced. He previously held partner roles at Meritech and Kleiner Perkins, where he led investments in companies including Kalshi, the CFTC-regulated prediction market, along with Datadog, DoorDash, Snowflake, and Slack. Menlo highlighted his record identifying founders and markets that achieve scale. Kurland's move brings prediction-market experience to a firm whose portfolio already spans enterprise software and consumer platforms.

Why this matters?

Kurland's Kalshi relationship gives Menlo Ventures a direct line into the prediction-markets funding race that has consumed the sector. Trump Jr.'s 1789 Capital just committed $300 million to Polymarket at a $21 billion valuation, while Kalshi holds $1.12 billion from its own equity offering. Menlo now gains an insider who can evaluate whether prediction-market valuations reflect durable platform economics or political-event bubbles. Kalshi, Kurland's departure means losing a board-level ally with cross-platform perspective just as state enforcement actions intensify.

Other venture firms watching the sector face a narrower pool of partners with active prediction-market deals. The next Menlo investment in the space will reveal whether Kurland champions Kalshi again or builds rival positions through ParlayX and Novig. His track record with OpenEvidence and Looker suggests healthcare and data infrastructure remain his parallel focus, so prediction markets may compete for his attention rather than dominate it.

The bigger picture

Kurland's arrival at Menlo adds a Kalshi-backing investor to a venture landscape already crowded with prediction-market capital, joining Trump Jr.'s 1789 Capital, ICE, and the major rounds that have reshaped platform finance this year.
