Study finds prediction markets appear in half of sampled midterm forecast searches

Published Oct 30, 2026

A study found prediction markets appeared in roughly half of sampled searches for midterm election forecasts. The finding highlights the visibility of these platforms even though 24 states ban election betting outright. Federally regulated prediction markets still offer election contracts across the country. The study surfaces alongside post-2024 election analysis noting that prediction markets and betting sites outperformed traditional pollsters in forecasting the presidential race, with betting sites correctly forecasting a Trump win weeks before the election.

Why this matters?

Search visibility turns prediction-market prices into default forecast context for voters who may not distinguish trading sentiment from polling accuracy. That exposure is double-edged for platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket: it builds mainstream legitimacy, but any major pricing miss will punish retail entrants and platform credibility together. The 24 state bans on election betting mean half the country encounters these prices while living under prohibitions.

Retail users arriving through search lack tools to separate signal from noise, so a credibility collapse would feed directly into state attorneys general arguments that these contracts are gambling products, not forecasts. Kalshi's Bloomberg placement already pushes odds to millions of readers who cannot parse capital-at-risk from polling methodology.
