Nevada judge orders Kalshi to block state residents from all event contracts by May 4

Updated 35d ago

Carson City District Court Judge Jason Woodbury granted a preliminary injunction to the Nevada Gaming Control Board on April 28, ordering Kalshi to geofence Nevada and stop allowing state residents to trade event contracts tied to elections, entertainment, and sporting events. Kalshi must implement the necessary controls by May 4. Woodbury had earlier characterized sports event contracts as gambling under state law. The injunction marks a state-level setback for the federally regulated prediction market platform, which now faces a compliance deadline to cut off access for Nevada traders across all event contract categories.

Why this matters?

Forces Kalshi to build state-level geofencing for Nevada by May 4 just as it is racing to expand sports event contracts nationally ahead of the NFL season, burning engineering resources that competitors like Polymarket can redirect to product while Kalshi fights state-by-state injunctions.
