NBA and WNBA group sports betting and prediction markets together in responsible gaming campaign
The NBA and WNBA announced a responsible gaming campaign with the National Council on Problem Gambling the week before the 2026-27 season starts. The leagues treat state-regulated sports betting and prediction markets as a single category of risk. The campaign will educate fans, particularly young adults, about the risks associated with both products. The leagues said the core aim is fan education about risks common to both markets.
The NBA has now formally placed prediction markets in the same risk bucket as traditional sports betting. That framing gives state attorneys general a powerful commercial ally in their argument that CFTC-regulated event contracts are gambling products needing state oversight. The NFL already backed New Jersey's Supreme Court bid and Ohio's Sixth Circuit win against Kalshi; the NBA's campaign adds a second major league pushing the same equivalence theory in public messaging.
For Kalshi and Polymarket, league-level classification means every sports contract faces potential geofencing demands or data-sharing mandates. The campaign also signals to Congress that sports leagues want unified federal surveillance access across both product types. Platforms must now budget for lobbying against league-backed legislation or accept compliance templates that raise costs across every operator listing sports contracts.
