Kalshi applies for risk-based margining on event contracts
Kalshi has applied for regulatory approval to offer risk-based margining on selected event contracts, a shift from its current fully collateralized model. The move would let eligible traders use borrowed funds rather than posting full collateral upfront, with contract-level margin requirements varying by type and market conditions. The product targets institutional traders and would mark Kalshi's expansion beyond cash-upfront mechanics. All three sources identified the filing date as September 22, 2026. Kalshi currently owns its clearinghouse, which could speed implementation if approved.
Margin approval would let Kalshi compete directly with brokerage options accounts that already offer leveraged equity exposure. Robinhood already drives the largest prediction-market revenue stream of any retail brokerage, and its users expect margin as standard. Without it, Kalshi risks looking like a toy inside a real trading app.
The filing's scope matters for ForecastEx and Polymarket too: whichever platform first cracks margin rules for event contracts will set the collateral and eligibility template rivals must match. CFTC delay is the real threat here. Every month without approval lets offshore venues keep their leverage advantage intact. Kalshi's clearinghouse ownership speeds the path but concentrates the compliance burden squarely on one firm's balance sheet.
