Kalshi blocks Indian users after technology ministry declares prediction markets illegal

Published Jun 23, 2026 Updated 27h ago

Kalshi Inc. has added India to its list of restricted jurisdictions, blocking Indian users from accessing the CFTC-regulated platform's event contracts. The move came weeks after India's technology ministry warned in early June that prediction market platforms are illegal under Indian law and that offshore operators could face enforcement action for serving Indian residents. The restriction raises Kalshi's total blocked jurisdictions to 55. India had previously pressured VPN providers to stop facilitating access to offshore prediction markets, according to reports published June 23, 2026. The block follows a broader Indian government crackdown on prediction market platforms operating domestically.

Why this matters?

Kalshi must now operate without what had been one of Asia's largest addressable retail markets, shrinking its international footprint while it fights simultaneous state-level legal battles in Kentucky, New Mexico, and Minnesota.
