Gate.io launches 5-minute and 15-minute stock event contracts for chipmakers
Crypto exchange Gate.io launched stock event contracts on September 8 that let traders bet on 5- and 15-minute price direction for Micron Technology, SanDisk, SK Hynix, and Unitree Robotics. The contracts settle in USDT without leverage. The product targets short-term equity speculation using stablecoin rails rather than traditional fiat, marking Gate.io's entry into short-dated equity-linked event contracts offshore.
Gate.io's move compresses the timeframe for equity event contracts to minutes, a speed layer Robinhood already matched for crypto but no major venue offers for individual stocks. That velocity trains traders to treat event contracts like turbo options, with settlement in stablecoins bypassing fiat friction entirely. For U.S. venues, this sets up a product gap: Kalshi and Polymarket list hours- to days-long contracts under CFTC rules, leaving the sub-hour equity niche to offshore operators.
The risk is regulatory arbitrage. If minute-level equity bets scale offshore, U.S. pressure to speed up settlement or relax contract durations will grow. Gate.io's chipmaker focus also ties the product to the AI semiconductor trade, piggybacking volatility retail traders already chase. A single CFTC action against a similar structure would chill this model fast, but absent enforcement, competitors must match the cadence or lose that flow.
