Kalshi introduces first tungsten hedge with Pillar and Susquehanna Predictions
Businesses can now hedge tungsten price exposure using Kalshi event contracts tied to the SMM CIF Rotterdam benchmark. Pillar, an AI-powered risk management platform, structured the hedge for an Ohio-based metals distributor alongside Susquehanna Predictions. Tungsten prices have risen more than 500% amid mounting supply restrictions on the defense-critical metal. Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated derivatives exchange.
This deal tests whether event contracts can capture commercial hedging volume from commodity markets historically served by futures exchanges. Pillar's role as a producer-side risk manager matters: it can feed industrial clients directly onto Kalshi instead of onto CME or LME contracts. Susquehanna Predictions' participation signals that established trading infrastructure is willing to price and clear these novel instruments.
For Kalshi, each successful physical-economy hedge weakens the gambling label state attorneys general use to pierce its federal preemption shield. But the strategy carries regulatory risk. If courts view these contracts as thin wrappers on commodity speculation rather than genuine business insurance, the same state suits already threatening Kalshi's sports contracts could extend to tungsten. The platform must now defend its dual identity in parallel courts while trying to grow a corporate book that increasingly resembles the very products states want to ban.
Adds industrial commodity hedging to the business-insurance use case Kalshi piloted with the LA bar group's Dodgers playoff revenue hedge, as the platform builds a corporate book beyond retail traders.
