Federal judge enjoins Kalshi sports contracts on California tribal lands

Published Nov 5, 2026Updated 7h ago

U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley granted a preliminary injunction Wednesday barring Kalshi from offering sports event contracts on tribal lands in California. The ruling in Blue Lake Rancheria v. Kalshi follows a Ninth Circuit reversal and marks the first injunction against Kalshi's sports contracts. The order is limited to tribal territories and requires tribes to submit boundary maps by November 13. It does not constitute a statewide ban.

Why this matters?

The injunction fractures Kalshi's California footprint rather than wiping it out, forcing geofenced operations that add technical and legal cost. Sporttrade, newly dual-registered as a CFTC exchange and clearing house, enters the market with no tribal litigation baggage and can offer sports contracts statewide where Kalshi now cannot.

The ruling also erodes the preemption defense Kalshi has leaned on, joining losses in Ohio, Tennessee, and Arkansas where state attorneys general have stripped federal shields or tested them. Utah presses felony charges against co-founders Mansour and Lopes Lara, raising personal prison exposure. Each state victory becomes template law the next attorney general copies. Kalshi must now budget for state-by-state defense while Sporttrade courts broker partners and builds liquidity.
