Spring is here, summer is near, but your backyard and patio upgrades might have tariffs to fear. (I promise this isn’t a poem.)

Whether it’s finally getting that new grill or just replacing a rusty rake, prices on backyard items could be increasing because of the president’s trade policies.

Of course, it’s tough to keep up with the news cycle. Trump’s tariffs change every day, sometimes seemingly every hour. What’s the latest? Well, with the exception of China, who now face 245% tariffs, he issued a 90-day pause on most of his “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs—however, 10% blanket tariffs remain across most of the globe.

That means the price of goods made from China or specific materials like steel and aluminum are in danger of spiking, which could require you to put a little more money aside to create your perfect backyard escape.

Here are 10 common backyard items that may experience a price bump soon.

1. The Beloved BBQ Grill

Last summer, I bought a very affordable Weber Kettle Kettle, forgoing the seductive but expensive Green Egg. I’m happy with my decision—but that’s neither here nor there.

Many grills, especially popular affordable models, rely heavily on imported steel, aluminum, and components often manufactured overseas (looking at you, China). Tariffs on these materials or finished goods could mean landing a new grill could cost more than it did a year ago.

2. Outdoor Furniture Sets

That comfy spot for morning coffee or an evening nightcap? Whether it’s chic aluminum frames or woven resin over metal, a lot of patio furniture takes a long trip across the ocean before landing in your yard. Tariffs on imported furniture or the metals used to make it could make kicking back and relaxing a bit more expensive.

3. Patio Umbrella

Don’t forget the shade (but please remember to lock it down properly; mine recently took off for flight like it was Mary Poppins).  Many patio umbrellas use aluminum or steel for their poles and ribs, materials that are caught in tariff crosshairs. The fabric might be imported too.

4. Lawnmowers & Power Equipment

Showing off that lawn requires hardwood, sweat, and good machinery doesn’t hurt.  Lawnmowers, edgers, weed eaters, and blowers are packed with metal parts and engines, many of which include components sourced globally

5. Wheelbarrows & Garden Carts

Hauling mulch, soil, or yard waste gets a lot easier with a wheelbarrow. Its an excellent workhorse to have handy for backyard projects. But that sturdy basin? It’s often made of steel or heavy-duty plastic, and the frame is typically metal.

6. Metal Garden Tools (Shovels, Rakes, Hoes)

Your trusty shovel, rake, or hoe might seem simple, but the business ends are usually made of steel or other metals. Many affordable hand tools are imported, too. As you get ready to dig the dirt, these tools could dig deeper into your wallet.

7. Outdoor String Lights and Path Lighting

Setting the mood outside? Those popular LED string lights and solar path lights are overwhelmingly imported, often containing plastic, metal components, and electronics sourced from regions likely targeted by tariffs. Your evening ambiance might get a little pricier.

8. Swing Sets & Play Structures

Oh no, my son is going to hate this one. And I guess I am too.

Giving kids a place to burn off energy is priceless, but that swing set has a cost. Many play structures rely on powder-coated steel, are built with aluminum frames, and/or lumber.

9. Fire Pits & Outdoor Heaters

I’m kicking myself for waiting to purchase a fire pit. It’s getting warm enough that I don’t need one now, but eventually, a fire pit or a heater is essential for extending patio season into cooler nights in the fall and winter. These are usually made from steel, cast iron, and you guessed it: aluminum.
