What is ‘Warfare’?
Warfare is a war action film based on the experiences of one of the directors/writers, Ray Mendoza, with the Iraq War. Along with Mendoza, the film was directed and written by frequent A24 collaborator, Alex Garland.
Written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (Civil War, 28 Days Later), Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.
The ensemble cast is packed with current young actor favorites – D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Noah Centineo, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton, just to name a few. The film was made relatively quickly, with a development announcement in February 2024, filming in May 2024, and a release date in April 2025.
Critical reception of Alex Garland films and shows
While this is Mendoza’s feature directorial debut, Garland has been directing since 2004.
Movie | Rotten Tomatoes Score |
Ex Machina (2014) | 92% |
Annihilation (2018) | 88% |
Devs (2020) | 82% |
Men (2022) | 69% |
Civil War (2024) | 81% |
Garland has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes track record, with an average score of 82.4. His directorial debut, Ex Machina, earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won a BAFTA for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
A24 distributed Ex Machina, Men, and Civil War, which clearly shows the company’s faith in Garland’s ability to write and direct a strong feature film. He’s also written several other films that were received well – 28 Days Later (87%), Sunshine (76%), and Dredd (80%). Impressively, a majority of his films are Certified Fresh.

Early reviews of ‘Warfare’
The social media reactions have been flowing in since the middle of March, and reviews were published on March 28, 2025. The reactions have been overwhelmingly positive praising how the film portrays the realities of war.
As of March 31, 2025, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is 92% based on 38 reviews. IGN’s Eric Goldman wrote that the film“is incredibly effective at putting you into the middle of combat, evoking feelings of dread and terror usually reserved for the darkest horror movies.” The Nerds of Color’s Kelly Martinez believe the movie “is raw, honest, & absolutely bone-chilling.”
#Warfare is raw, honest, & absolutely bone-chilling. The 1st act is uncomfortable at times. Don’t be dissuaded by the trailer, if you were. This does not glorify the war or gloss over the devastating impact it had on the Iraqi people. It’s truly devastating on every level. pic.twitter.com/dm1SopaD8n

With strong early reviews, a proven director, and a history of critical success from both A24 and Garland, Warfare seems poised to land a high Rotten Tomatoes score. But will it hold steady at 92%, or will it change?
