After Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’s release earlier this year, we are getting another big-name action sequel — The Accountant 2. Nine years after the first film, The Accountant 2 arrives in U.S. theaters on April 25.

Top prediction platform Kalshi has created a market for users to trade on the film’s Rotten Tomatoes Score. As of Apr. 17, the forecasted score is 78.2.

With over $100,000 in trading volume, the chemistry between the two leads may help make the sequel perform better among critics than its predecessor. Here’s what you should know before you start trading on The Accountant 2 Rotten Tomatoes market.

What is ‘The Accountant 2’?

The Accountant 2 is a sequel to the 2016 original film, which received $155.2 million at the box office with a $44 million budget. The sequel sees the return of Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and J. K. Simmons.

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) has a talent for solving complex problems. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to "find the accountant," Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal), to help.

Gavin O’Connor and Bill Dubuque returned to direct and write the sequel, respectively. The director confirmed that the films are planned as a trilogy.

By understanding the genre and topics a film covers, you can examine other films in the same category and see how they perform. Action movies tend to be hit-or-miss with critics, largely depending on a good script, cast, and director to create a unique and well-executed action film.

Critical reception of past Gavin O'Connor and Bill Dubuque films

When trying to forecast a film’s Rotten Tomatoes score, it can be effective to look at the film’s director’s and writer’s past critical history. If they have almost always created high-quality films, it would suggest a stronger score for this film.

Let’s take a look at O’Connor’s other directorial work.

Movie Name

Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Way Back (2020)

85%

The Accountant (2016)

53%

Jane Got a Gun (2016)

42%

Warrior (2011)

84%

Pride and Glory (2008)

35%

Miracle (2004)

81%

Tumbleweeds (1999)

82%

With seven films directed, O’Connor’s average Rotten Tomatoes score is 66. While this is a Fresh score, it’s not very strong. The Accountant was not well received by critics and received a Rotten score of 53%.

However, O’Connor worked with Affleck in an action film called The Way Back after The Accountant, which received an impressive 85%. Perhaps this positive growth could indicate a positive growth for this sequel as well.

Now, let’s take a look at screenwriter Dubuque’s Rotten Tomatoes history.

Movie Name

Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Headhunter’s Calling (2017)

17%

The Accountant (2016)

53%

The Judge (2014)

49%

Dubuque only worked on two other scripts besides The Accountant, and all three films received Rotten scores. Dubuque’s limited experience and poor past critical scores are a bad sign for the sequel.

Early reviews of ‘The Accountant 2’

While we can theorize based on historic performance, the most substantial evidence is early reactions to the film. The Accountant 2 premiered at the South by Southwest Festival on March 8.

Surprisingly, the film received positive reviews from critics. With 36 reviews, the current Rotten Tomatoes score for The Accountant 2 stands at 86%. Of course, many more reviews need to be counted, but this is a very good sign for the film.

The critical consensus thus far says that the sequel improves “on the original by leaning into Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s buddy comedy chemistry.” TheWraps’s Matt Donato complimented the sequel by saying, “The Accountant 2 surpasses its original by keying into a lenient and dangerously playful tone.”

Most critics praise the film’s more playful tone and how it features the brotherhood at its core. With strong early reactions, the film may get a Fresh score. But be wary of being overconfident; many more reviews are coming and can drastically change the score.
