From Adolescence's record-breaking views to Sofia Carson's Netflix magic, inside the streaming platform's trending content

Netflix is at the top of the streaming market, and it’s largely thanks to its ever-evolving library of content. From original projects like Bridgerton to acquired projects like Suits, audiences are joining Netflix to consume it.

Thanks to the $18 billion Netflix spends on content, trends and top projects are constantly changing. Meanwhile, these top leaderboards are the subject of weekly prediction markets on Kalshi.

Bettors are betting on the top TV shows and movies on the U.S. weekly charts. The important thing to note is how they calculate the top projects – it’s the content’s views divided by its runtime.

Before we take a look at shows and movies are likely to rise to the top this week, let’s look back at what happened last week.

Top TV shows last week?

  1. Adolescence (Limited Series)
  2. The Residence (Season 1)
  3. Bert Kreischer: Lucky
  4. Raw: 2025 – March 17, 2025
  5. Temptation Island (Season 1)
  6. Ms. Rachel (Season 1)
  7. Running Point (Season 1)
  8. The Walking Dead: Dead City (Season 1)
  9. Zero Day (Limited Series)
  10. Beauty in Black (Season 1)

Top US Netflix TV show this week?

Unlike last week’s Netflix releases, there is less competition in this category.

Adolescence

Release Date: 2 weeks ago – March 13, 2025

Runtime: 4 Episodes — 51-65 minutes each

You may be wondering how a show that was released two weeks ago could be at the top of the charts on its third week – this happens fairly rarely. Adolescence has been at the top of the charts for its first two weeks and has boasted impressive streaming numbers.

In its first week, the show received an impressive 24.3 million views globally. But that’s not all – it’s second week of viewership doubled.

In the second week, Adolescence was 42 million views and reached a new total of 66.3 million views globally. This made it the most-watched first two weeks for a Netflix limited series ever.

The show has also made history in the U.K., becoming the first streaming show to top the U.K.’s weekly TV ratings. But beyond just views, the show has prompted conversations in the U.K. government about toxic masculinity. Importantly, users are betting on U.S. rankings only but the impact in the U.K. can help boost the momentum in the States.

Even with a potential decline in third-week viewership, the show’s strong performance in its first two weeks positions it well to maintain the top spot.

The Residence

Release Date: Last week – March 20, 2025

Runtime: 8 episodes — predicted to be 60 minutes each

While Adolescence reigned supreme lastweek, The Residence came in a distant second place, receiving a much smaller 6.4 million views globally — Certainly below expectations for a Shondaland show.

Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and Inventing Anna were all instant successes with huge numbers, but this show seemed to pale in comparison to Adolescence

With the continued hype and success surrounding Adolesence, along with its short runtime, The Residence will be unlikely to be able to take over the top spot.

Survival of the Thickest

Release Date: Thursday, March 27, 2025

Runtime: 8 episodes — about 28 minutes each

Michelle Buteau’s dramedy series is returning for its second season almost two years after its first season premiered. The series is based on Buteau’s memoir with the same name.

After 90 days, the first season was viewed more than 7 million times in the U.S.. If the show is able to gain some steam, it could challenge The Residence for the second spot, depending on how poorly the Shondaland project performs.

However, if Buteau’s show doesn’t gain too much attention, it may even have difficulty getting on the Top 10. However, since the first season, Buteau has had a Netflix stand-up special and was recently in the Netflix Original film Babes. This may boost the project’s chances to the top 10 but unlikely to the top of the charts.

Top movies last week?

  1. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera
  2. The Twister: Caught in the Storm
  3. Kraven the Hunter
  4. The Electric State
  5. Despicable Me 4
  6. Trap
  7. Plankton: The Movie
  8. Everest
  9. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  10. The Secret Life of Pets

Top US Netflix movie this week?

This week will have a couple of films that can take the first spot.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera

Release Date: Last week – March 20, 2025

Runtime: 144 minutes

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was, unsurprisingly, the top film on Netflix last week. The new action film was recently in theaters and the quick streaming release led to fans rushing to watch the film.

Co-stars Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr were able to bring audiences to their action-led film. These kinds of classic action films perform well on Netflix, similar to The Electric State being the top film last week.

The film may remain at the top if it can maintain its momentum, but two other projects may challenge its spot.

The Life List

Release Date: Friday, May 28, 2025

Runtime: 123 minutes

The Life List is the latest Netflix movie starring Sofia Carson. Netflix loves producing movies with Carson as the lead.

In fact, this would be her fifth Netflix project after Carry‑On, Purple Hearts, Feel the Beat, and My Little Pony: A New Generation. This isn’t too surprising given the success of many of these projects. Carry On had the biggest film debut on Netflix for 2024. Purple Hearts was the third most watched movie of 2022.

Clearly, Carson is some kind of lucky charm for Netflix, and The Life List may be their next hit. Similar to Purple Hearts, The Life List is a rom-com based on a book.

With the film’s shorter runtime and Carson as the lead, this movie is the top competitor to take the No. 1 spot.

Talk To Me

Release Date: Friday, May 28, 2025

Runtime: 95  minutes

A24’s Talk to Me is coming to Netflix after being released in the Summer of 2023. The film was a massive success for A24, with a box office gross of $91.9 million worldwide and a $4.5 million budget. It became A24’s most successful horror film.

The film was also critically acclaimed, with a Certified Fresh score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unlike other horror films where the critical reception or audiences don’t like the film, Talk To Me was liked by both.

With the shortest runtime of the three movies, the film has a strong potential to perform well on Netflix.
