Mickey 17 (not the Mouse) is a new movie arriving in United States theaters on March 7, 2025. Robert Pattinson is starring in the film, and some are predicting it to be a Best Picture contender next year.

What is ‘Mickey 17’?
Mickey 17 is a sci-fi dark comedy produced, written, and directed by the Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho. Joon-ho is most well-known for his work on the Best Picture-winning movie Parasite.
The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.
Besides Pattinson, the film’s cast also includes Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. The film is based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7 and premiered on February 15 at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.

Joon-ho has directed eight films with Rotten Tomatoes scores, and most of the films have secured scores in the 90s. His films have an impressive average score of 91.
Only one of the films received a score in the 70s. In addition to directing all of these films, he also wrote them.
Pattinson has also been in many movies that have performed well in the post-Twilight era. In the 20-ish movies he’s been in since the last Twilight movie, only three received Rotten scores.
Early reviews of ‘Mickey 17’
The film’s reviews are mostly positive so far. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has received 64 reviews and has a score of 89%.
Of the 17 Top Critic reviews, only two of them are Rotten. One negative review by Variety’s Peter Debruge says, “too much of Mickey 17 turns out to be sloppy, shrill and preachy.” While IndieWire’s David Ehrlich believes this film is “the best and most cohesive of Bong’s English-language films.”
Some critics are even suggesting that Pattinson’s performance is Oscar-worthy, with some calling for a Best Actor nomination.

With early reviews leaning positive and a strong track record for both Joon-ho and Pattinson, Mickey 17 seems to be heading for success. While final reviews could still shift things, all signs point to Mickey 17 being another hit for Joon-ho.
