What is Kalshi?

Kalshi is prediction market platform, not a sportsbook, where users can make trades on the outcome of future events, which include everything from elections,  to weather forecasts and Rotten Tomatoes scores, and now sports!

Since Kalshi is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Kalshi’s markets are available in all 50 states. Users must be residents of the United States and at least 18 years old to begin trading.

Think of it like a stock market, but instead of trading shares of companies, you trade “Yes” or “No” contracts on questions about future events.

Contracts trade between $0.01 and $0.99 and resolve to $1 if the event happens (“Yes”) or $0 if it doesn’t (“No”). The prices are dynamic and change in real time, meaning you can sell our buy anytime before the event is over. So, if you buy a position at a low price and it increases in value, you can sell for a profit before the event is actually determined.

Kalshi's College Basketball Markets

Since Kalshi is available in all 50 states, it means that you can make real money college basketball predictions in jurisdictions that currently prohibit sports betting, such as Texas, California,

Kalshi’s markets are limited to the winner of each game, round qualifiers, and national title odds. In other words, you can’t trade on over/unders, point spreads, or player props. Kalshi sports contracts are essentially limited to the sportsbook equivalent of moneyline wagers and sports futures.

Current Kalshi odds

Take a look at current Kalshi basketball markets and odds below, starting with live national title odds.

And here are the game matchups.

How To Make Your First Trade

As you’ve probably noticed (and as we have briefly discussed), prediction markets are a bit different than sportsbooks.

You don’t see actual odds on Kalshi (though users can enable American odds to be used instead of prices in their account settings).

These prices conveniently convert to implied probabilities. For example, Michigan State at 63 cents implies a 63% chance of winning the game. On the other side, Ole Miss at 38 cents implies a 38% chance to win the game.

In American odds, these prices convert to -170 and +163, respectively.

Once you sign up with the promo code PREDICTION and create an account, you’ll want to start trading.

Simply click on the contracts you want to purchase. On Kalshi, you can choose to either “Buy in dollars” or “Buy in contracts.”

If you’re new to prediction markets, buying in dollars is probably easiest.

Let’s use Duke as an example, whose price is currently 35 cents to win the national title.

If you buy 100 “YES” contracts for Duke, the price will be $35 + $1.60 in fees (Kalshi charges a small fee when trades are made), meaning you are risking $36.60 to return $100 for a net profit of $63.40 if Duke wins the championship.

If Duke’s price soars to, say, 70 cents before the title game, you can sell for a sizeable profit before the event is over. You can also trade live during games.

On the flip side, users can also buy “No” contracts if they want to bet against a team.

5 Reasons To Trade On Kalshi

  • Trade In and Out Anytime: Unlike a fixed bet you place pre-game, you can buy or sell your contracts before the event concludes. Lock in profits if your prediction looks good, or cut losses if the game isn’t going your way.

  • Dynamic Prices, Not Fixed Odds: Contract prices move based on the market’s collective prediction (supply and demand), reflecting the real-time probability of an event happening. Buy low, sell high.

  • Hedge Your Bets: Already have bets placed elsewhere? Use Kalshi markets to hedge your position and potentially guarantee a profit or minimize potential losses regardless of the outcome.

  • No Longer Betting ‘Against the House’: Since Kalshi is an exchange, it’s a peer-to-peer platform where users trade against each other rather than against a bookmaker. Kalshi does charge a small fee, but you can often find better odds than you will at sportsbooks.
  • Regulated & Transparent: As a CFTC-regulated exchange, Kalshi offers a transparent and secure environment for trading. The platform is safe and legit, and you can expect to be paid quickly, unlike with unregulated offshore sportsbooks.

  • Available in all 50 States: Though we mentioned it earlier, it’s worth mentioning again. You can trade on Kalshi no matter where you are in the United States, so long as you’re of age and a U.S. resident.
