What to know:

  • Kalshi has introduced weekly entertainment betting markets on Netflix’s top TV shows and movies each week
  • This week’s Netflix charts have new projects like Squid Games’ season 2 dominating the TV chart and more-than-a-decade-old Despicable Me 2 leading the movie rankings.
  • Next week’s rankings could see a tight race, with XO, Kitty potentially challenging Squid Games’ season 2 on the TV charts and Back in Action going up against Despicable Me 2 at the top of the movie charts.

There’s a new market in town. Kalshi has revealed several new entertainment betting markets with quick turnarounds, including the top movie and show on Netflix of the week.

Netflix releases its Top 10 TV Shows and Movies list every Tuesday. The popular streaming service is constantly adding new shows and movies to its platform, and sometimes the projects that reach the top of these charts are unexpected.

So before you start making your Netflix predictions for next week, here’s what you need to know.

Netflix Top Shows This Week

These are the top shows for the week of Jan. 6-12 and their release dates.

Nine out of 10 of these projects are new and Netflix originals. Younger was just added to Netflix but is a TV Land show premiering back in 2015.

The top show Squid Games is back for its sophomore season. The first season premiered in 2021, and the second season has been at the top of the list for the last two weeks.  Season two has become the third most-watched season of television on Netflix.

Squid Games is likely to be at the top in next week’s ranking as well. However, its biggest challenger will be XO, Kitty

XO, Kitty is a spinoff from the popular YA Netflix trilogy To All The Boys. The films were incredibly popular and so was the spin-off show. It follows the original movie’s protagonist’s sister and her life as an exchange student in Korea.

Back in May 2023, when the first season of the show premiered, XO, Kitty was in a similar spot. It premiered a couple of weeks after a massively popular show last year. It reached a peak position of No. 2 and wasn’t able to overcome another spinoff, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

To be fair, Queen Charlotte and XO, Kitty have a more similar audience than it does with Squid Games. This may be a positive thing for XO, Kitty, because it won’t be splitting the viewership of the same demographic as Squid Games

Expect a tight race between the two shows.

Netflix Top Movies This Week

Just like with shows, the top charts for movies don’t always consist of new Netflix originals but can consist of older fan favorites. This is especially evident when you look at this week’s top movies on Netflix.

Half of the movies on this week’s most popular Netflix movies are over 10 years old. They were all added to the streaming platform in the last two or three weeks and have skyrocketed to the top of the charts.

Before this week, the action film Carry On was at the top of the charts for four weeks straight. Now, a whole new collection of films is at the top of the charts and Carry On is no longer there.

Despicable Me 2 is highly popular and is capable of maintaining its top spot. The only film that may challenge its spot is Back in Action. The film is led by Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx.

Diaz is back from a 10-year retirement to star in a classic action movie as a retired CIA agent couple. Classic action movies are usually hit-or-miss.

If Diaz has enough star power and people have missed her enough, the movie can easily reach the top. However, if the film is ignored like so many Netflix films, it may miss the Top 10 charts entirely.

This week’s rankings highlight the unpredictable nature of viewer preferences, with a mix of new originals like Squid Game season 2 dominating the TV charts and nostalgic classics like Despicable Me 2 topping the movie list.

For those planning to bet on next week’s rankings, the competition between Squid Games’ season 2 and XO, Kitty in the TV show category, as well as the potential rise of Back in Action in the movie category, could make for an exciting showdown.
